Science, honest science is the study of the
mechanisms that exist in the universe. The dictionary definition:
"knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the
operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through
scientific method" is a good description of what a scientist
does. This is what they do. From a scientific point of view
nothing is paranormal, supernatural, spritual. Things either have
evidence to support them or they don't. When two or more ideas
that all have evience supporting them exist, the one that has the most
convincing evidence is the one that 'wins'.
A surprising misconception about science is the
definition of the word "theory". In common language a theory is
not treated as a very secure truth. It is usually an idea that
fits the known facts. In very basic terms, this is what a
scientific theory is, but it is much more substantial than "just a
theory" But don't take my word for it. Here is a more
in-depth explanation from an actual scientist, Dave Esker
If there is anything analogous to "gospel" in the
scientific world that it can be said that scientists have "faith" in,
it would be the scientific
method, which governs the rule that scientists should use to learn
things that we don't currently know, but even that is an unfair
comparison because the scientific method has a proven track
record. All of our currently accepted scientific knowledge and
the technology we derive from it came about by using the scientific
method, so it is not fair to say that scientists have "faith" in the
scientific method. They don't have to. It proves itself
almost daily in the discoveries we make because of it.
